The SUNFLOWERS project was presented to the members of the SBaA

Bratislava, February 5, 2026

The Slovak Battery Alliance (SBaA) organized a meeting for its members, during which the SUNFLOWERS research project, focused on the development of a new generation of battery technologies, was presented.

The SUNFLOWERS project is co-financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic via the Research and Innovation Authority (VAIA), with a total budget of €12.6 million. Its implementation began in 2025 and will last 30 months. The goal of the project is to develop safer, higher-performing, and more environmentally friendly battery solutions, including innovative materials, electrolytes, and sustainable approaches to recycling.

SBaA is a partner in this project, and technical coordination is provided by Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Other partners from Slovakia and abroad are also involved, including institutions of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Aalborg Universitet (Denmark), the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Czech Republic), and the National Institute of Chemistry (Slovenia).

Basic information about the project was presented by young researcher Veronika Niščáková from Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, who, together with her colleagues Jakub Leščinský and Natália Podrojková, will present the results of their research at 2nd International Conference & Expo on Materials Science and Engineering in Osaka, Japan.

The project presentation created an opportunity for discussion on current challenges in battery technologies, possibilities for involving industrial partners in research, strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, as well as potential future communication activities about solutions in the field of battery technologies.
