Strbské Pleso, November 9.-12., 2025
From 9 to 12 November 2025, the first project meeting of the international SUNFLOWERS consortium took place at the Patria Hotel in Štrbské Pleso. The SUNFLOWERS project – Development and Design of Sustainable Composite Materials for Hybrid Energy Storage System Based on Li-Ion and Redox-Flow Batteries – is implemented under Slovakia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and focuses on the development of sustainable composite materials for hybrid energy storage systems.
The project aims to develop new, safe, and sustainable materials for modern battery technologies and integrate them into hybrid energy storage systems. The research focuses on combining lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and redox-flow batteries, which represent a promising alternative to current lithium-ion systems.
The project combines fundamental and applied research, with outputs expected to have a long-term impact on the development of battery technologies and energy storage not only in Slovakia but across Europe.
The meeting was led by the project coordinator, Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Andrea Strakova Fedorkova, PhD. (Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice), Chair of the Slovak Battery Alliance (SBaA). Over two days, presentations of all work packages took place, along with discussions on key tasks, timelines, and research methodologies. The program also included topics on communication, public engagement, and strategic planning for the project’s next steps.
"This first meeting confirmed the strong scientific potential of our consortium and our joint commitment to advancing research in sustainable battery technologies to a new level," said Assoc. Prof. Andrea Strakova Fedorkova, SUNFLOWERS project coordinator.
The project involves institutions from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Denmark:
Within the project, SBaA is responsible for communication and educational activities aimed at both professional and general audiences.
